Important Things You Should Know About The Retest Process

When a vehicle fails the inspection, the motorist must have the vehicle repaired and brought back for a retest. The repair technician must complete the Repair Data Form for the motorist in order for the vehicle to be retested. What's the Repair Data Section and where is it found? The Repair Data Section is located on the 2nd page of the vehicle inspection report and contains information which will be used to track your repair facilities success rate for fixing failed vehicles.

When a motorist brings a vehicle back for a retest, the inspector cannot proceed with the inspection unless the Repair Data Form is completed. If you have performed repairs on the vehicle, it is very important that you complete this section, including the following:

  • Repair Item Checklist: Indicate which items were repaired, replaced or recommended for repair, but not performed. If you recommended a repair but the motorist declined to authorize the repair work, it is important that you indicate this on the back of the vehicle inspection report. That vehicle's retest will not be used in your performance monitoring record. If you did not repair or replace an item because it was ok, you do not need to check the box.
  • Repair Summary: Indicate the name of your repair facility, address, work order number, phone number, and total parts and labor costs. If available, we recommended using a preprinted stamp or selfstick label for the addressing information. If your repair facility uses more than one phone number, be sure to consistently use the same number for this data section. It should also be signed and dated.

Remember, only repairs performed by a recognized repair facility can be applied to cost waivers. For more information on cost waivers, click here.

Because the information in the Repair Data Form is so important, a retest cannot be performed until this section is completed properly. This verifies that a motorist has had repair work performed between vehicle inspections, and provides important data on the vehicle's emission repair history. Information supplied in the Repair Data Section becomes a useful tool to assist in the repair of particular engine families.
